ACEVO’s board oversees the direction and management of the association.
Board members are often involved in other aspects of ACEVO’s work such as sitting on sub-committees, chairing special interest groups and acting as ambassadors for ACEVO. We are committed to good governance and the board has reviewed its performance against the code of good governance using the methodology of ACEVO’s own governance review tool.
The board consists of up to 10 full members elected by the membership, up to four individuals co-opted by the board (including a chair from the membership and treasurer appointed by the board) and ACEVO’s chief executive.

Rosie is chief executive of The House of St Barnabas, a social enterprise members’ club and employment academy which exists to break the cycle of homelessness. Prior to this she was chief executive of Gingerbread, the national charity for single parent families where she led the charity through a period of significant organisational change. Rosie was also chief executive of London Youth where she grew the organisation significantly in income and impact. She was interim director at Youth Business International, a commissioner on the London Fairness Commission and a trustee of Centre for London.
Rosie joined the board in 2019.
David is chief executive of Teesside Hospice and has 17 years’ experience of leadership roles in the public and healthcare sectors in both executive and non-executive roles. Beginning his career working in finance, before moving into advice work and charity management David took up his first chief officer role in 2001 and since 2006 has worked in healthcare with a specific focus on mental health and well-being becoming chief executive of Hull and East Yorkshire Mind. Holding a Master’s in Charities Resource Management David regularly engages in public debate on issues such as mental health, charities and leadership.
David joined the board in 2018.
Joyce is chief operating officer of the Black Equity Organisation. She was previously director of finance and resources at SignHealth and has worked in the charity sector since 2009 after more than 10 years in the book publishing and media industry. Before joining SignHealth, Joyce held senior finance leadership positions in various national charities including CPAG and Charity Digital. Joyce is also an active member of CFG and a board member of Gingerbread.
Joyce joined the board in 2020.
Kate is chief executive of Ategi, a not-for-profit support provider who work with adults who need help to live their lives. She was previously the chief exec at Autism at Kingwood, a charity and specialist support provider of services to autistic adults. With an initial career in information technology, Kate left senior management and leadership roles in the corporate sector in 2002 to pursue a career in the charitable and voluntary sector. With a Masters in Health & Social Care, Kate has been an active board member with Association for Real Change – an organisation representing service providers in the learning disability sector – stepping off as trustee and committee chair in September 2019.
Kate joined the board in 2020.
Neil Heslop OBE
Neil is chief executive of CAF, and co-founder of the charity Blind In Business, serving as a trustee since 1992. He was previously CEO of international pan-disability charity Leonard Cheshire Disability and acted as an advisor to the UK government on the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act. Neil is also co-chair of the Disability Charities Consortium, a group of the eight largest disability charities dedicated to promoting the rights and interests of 13 million disabled people in the UK.
Neil joined the board in 2020.
Tiger de Souza MBE
Tiger is the people engagement director at the National Trust. He is a versatile and accomplished volunteering and OD strategist with a record of delivering results and supporting organisational change. Both analytical and curious with a preference for using evidence, data and insight to shape future strategy. An infectiously enthusiastic leader with a commitment to collaboration and a passion to improve our world.
Tiger joined the board in 2021.
Rashid Iqbal
Rashid is chief executive of the Winch, a place-based youth and community charity in Camden, which delivers innovative programmes, including Take Back the Power and North Camden Zone. He has volunteered in small organisations and start-ups, including as a founder trustee of Transform Justice and as a CAB Management Committee member. Rashid has held senior leadership positions in national organisations, including Refugee Action, as well as having made a small contribution to the establishment of national wellbeing indicators, through secondment to the UK Government Cabinet Office.
Rashid joined the board in 2020.
Ruth is chief executive of the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), the national membership organisation for civil society in Wales. Prior to this Ruth was director of care and development for Reach, now part of the Pobl Housing Group, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, director of RNIB Cymru, chief executive of Chwarae Teg and deputy director of Business in the Community Cymru. Ruth is a lifelong volunteer, has significant trustee experience and regularly contributes to committees, inquiries and programmes to promote volunteering.
Ruth joined the board in 2018.
Jane is ACEVO’s chief executive. She has most recently headed up Creative and Cultural Skills, working to create fair and inclusive opportunities within the creative and cultural sectors. Before that, she spent four years as CEO of NAVCA, where she led the transformation of the national membership body for local voluntary sector infrastructure organisations in England. She has leadership and communications experience in both the voluntary and public sectors and a genuine commitment to delivering a valuable and impactful experience for members.
Jane joined the board in 2022.
Andrew is chief executive of Humanists UK, the 125-year-old advocacy and service delivery charity for the non-religious. He is also president of Humanists International, the global umbrella body for national humanist organisations. Andrew has executive and non-executive experience in 16 voluntary organisations from local arts charities to international NGOs and has been an adviser to four government departments on ethics, equality, and human rights. He is based in the West Midlands where he was born and has a strong interest in localism and public affairs, working in political literacy and democracy charities.
Andrew joined the board in 2022.
